Frugal Friday: Disney Movie Rewards

Oct 27, 2017

A joke I frequently like to make is that Mickey doesn’t like to let people save money. I know it’s not actually Mickey’s fault, if you watch any of the Mickey Mouse shorts, our beloved Mouse is always poor. He’s front line, just like most of us. Disney does like to encourage brand loyalty and to get you to spend more of your hard earned dollars on their products. One way they do this is through the Disney Movie Rewards Program, an ingenious way to reward people for buying Disney DVDs, Blu-Rays, and tickets. Each purchase comes with a code that is entered on their website for a set amount of points. Points can then be redeemed for a variety of prizes. Over the years I’ve gotten posters, Jim Shore figures, collectibles and printables. I’ve always been good at hustling to find points. I remember in high school going to my friend’s houses and rifling through their DVD collections to steal the codes. (I’m not proud of this, but to be fair they weren’t using them.)

The point value system is fairly easy to grasp. Movie tickets for normal releases are 50 points each and 3D showings earn 75 points each. You can submit up to four tickets for each type of showing so if you’re one of those people who watches Marvel movies multiple times hold onto your extras! DVD codes range from 75 points to 100 points and Blu-Rays from 125 points to 200 points. The highest point class I’ve ever had was the special edition of the Lion King I bought in college-it was 400 points! Soundtracks range from 50 points to 125 points depending on the format.

Disney Movie Rewards takes nothing to join, and just a few minutes of time to set up and punch in codes. If you throw out those pieces of paper in the front of your DVDs or Blu-Rays you are literally throwing away free Disney stuff. Shipping is even free for most items, or you can opt to use less points and pay the shipping on some.
